We're going to be doing a series that will compare various aspects of the X1 with the Touch Pro, culminating in a comparison video that will declare a winner.
Let's start with screen. The Touch Pro has a 2.8" screen that is VGA (480x640) resolution, which makes for a pixel density (often a determiner of screen clarity - higher is better) of 285ppi. The XPERIA X1 has a 3.0" screen that is WVGA (480x800) resolution, which makes for a pixel density of 311ppi. If you look at both screens close up, the X1 looks slightly crisper because it has smaller pixels. How about screen brightness? Seen below is a shot of both devices on max brightness. Before I comment on that, notice how the longer screen on the X1 (left) allows for more icons to fit in one frame. In regards to brightness, the Touch Pro is the winner by a small margin. Quite simply, the whites are whiter, and the colors look just a tad richer. Which has better screen sensitivity? The Touch Pro has a flush screen, and the X1 has a recessed screen. As I mention several times in the XPERIA X1 review, the sensitivity of the X1's screen terrific, and significantly higher than the Touch Pro, especially noticeable if you're using a stylus. So, the X1 has the crisper screen with higher sensitivity, and the Touch Pro has a slightly brighter screen. That's 2 points for the X1, and 1 point for the Touch Pro. The X1 wins this round!

Nice comparison on the screen. Screen res/brightness/clarity is high up in my book. I mean what I/O portion of your PDA do you use most? That would be the screen.

Question for you: is the screen technology the same on the two devices? If so, then it would be theoretically possible to adjust the sensitivity of the Touch Pro, correct?

I think the non-standard WVGA resolution is a detractor, given that many programs will be incompatible with that resolution.

They both have resistive touchscreens. You can't adjust the sensitivity.

Supposedly you are able to adjust the sensitivity of the the Touch Pro when this tool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317070 I will have to try it later on today. But I see no need for adjusting on my Touch Pro. |

The Xperia info on this site is sounding more like the apple fansite "comparisons" of the iPhones to other devices. Less a true review and comparison than a "look how much better this is because I thinks it's great."

Good compare. Both of them are great phone. But to me,i like TP.X1 have a great screen,it win this round because Sony have a lot of experience (about PC,TV,Game,Camera...).HTC just a master of Window Mobile Phone.TP and X1 have the same Window Mobile by HTC,that why they have same application and difference because X1 have a panel, may be it look beautiful more than TouchFlo 3D,but it have alot of steps.TouchFlo 3D very simlpe and faster, that why it very easy to use.A lot of people try to hack it and use it on their phone.
One more thing about X1 win TP because Sony delay X1 to long (1 year),the first X1 very slow, that why they make it better before it coming out.Think about if HTC do the same thing like Sony, may be TP will not lose X1. |

I'm definitely an X1 fanboy, and why shouldn't I be? It's superior to most WinMo devices out there on many levels. Its closest competitor is the Touch Pro, which of course has its merits, and will win in certain areas in the upcoming installments of the comparison series. If it seems like I'm favoring the X1, it's not because I have love for Sony Ericsson or they're paying me to love it, but because it's a really good device, and I'm excited to be able to use something that is so refined and that has so few compromises =D.

I was just looking for something more objective, which you've admitted you aren't with this particular device.

Can you remain objective and still favor a device? Sure. If, objectively, one device has a better feature than another, then it becomes favored in that respect.

And if you'd asked him a few weeks ago before the X1 landed on his doorstep, it probably would have been the Touch Pro being crowned king. Especially since early prototype units of the X1 had very slow choppy interface. How can you review a device and compare it to other devices without picking favorites? Is that not the point? |
